Websites: what’s bounce rate and why should you care?

Attracting visitors to your website is just the beginning. Once a visitor lands on your website, engaging them becomes crucial. If they leave as quickly as they arrive, you’re faced with what’s known in the online industry as a high “bounce rate.” Although somewhat common, a high bounce rate may indicate a significant issue with your website. Let’s get into it!

Why worry about bounce rate?

Bounce rate doesn’t directly impact your site’s search engine ranking, at least not with Google, the most widely used search engine. Google doesn’t penalize you even if visitors only view one page on your website and then leave. This is because a high bounce rate can be perfectly normal for certain types of sites, such as blogs.

However, a high bounce rate can signal a problem, especially for websites like online stores. For example, if you notice that a significant number of your customers don’t explore beyond the first page, it’s time to ask yourself some important questions. This behaviour is often caused by content that doesn’t generate interest or enthusiasm. If you spot this happening, quick action is critical; otherwise, all your marketing efforts could go to waste.

What causes a high bounce rate?

The good news is that the reasons for a high bounce rate aren’t cryptic. It’s possible to identify and correct the causes of this problem, which can be divided into two main categories:

1. A disappointing browsing experience

Issues like slow page load times, intrusive advertising, an unappealing design, off-putting colours and a disorganized or unintuitive presentation can drive visitors away. With billions of web pages on the internet, providing a seamless customer experience is crucial in this highly competitive environment.

2. Poor-quality content

Neglecting the quality of your website’s content can leave visitors unsatisfied, especially when it’s the very content that attracted them to your page in the first place. Instead of focusing solely on attracting potential customers, you must provide captivating and engaging content that keeps visitors interested. Otherwise, they may go elsewhere for what they need, and you may never see them again.

What can be done about it?

If your website has issues around navigation, a professional web design agency will have the tools and knowledge to pinpoint the problem and improve the browsing experience. When looking for the right company, take the time to browse their portfolio and visit the websites they’ve designed.

When it comes to content, use experienced writers who can elevate the quality of your written word. Well-crafted content, presented in a dynamic and captivating way, can make a world of difference. If you have an in-house employee or colleague who fits the bill, even better! However, be aware that you can’t simply don the hat of copywriter for a day. Effective text relies on numerous writing processes and myriad details that must be mastered.
