Are you lacking inspiration or ideas? Do you ever find yourself staring at a blank computer screen, struggling to come up with ideas for your writing? If so, you’re not alone. Writer’s block can happen to anyone, even professional writers! In this blog, we’ll share seven tips to help you overcome writer’s block and find inspiration for your writing.
1. Determine the best time to write
Some people are hyper-productive in the morning, while others are more creative in the evening. If you tend to feel drowsy in the afternoon, don’t try to produce the text of the century between 2 and 3 p.m.! You’ll have the best chance of finding inspiration when you’re most energetic.
2. Consult documents related to the topic
Do you have to write about the challenges facing millennials? Hybrid cars? Organic food? Read articles, listen to podcasts or watch videos on the subject. Sometimes, all it takes is a powerful visual or a striking metaphor to feel motivated for hours!
3. Give yourself a much-needed break
Have you been unable to write a single line for what seems like an eternity? Take a break and go for a walk, even if the weather isn’t perfect. Trust us; getting your blood flowing and breathing in fresh air can help clear your mind and boost your creativity!
4. Ask your contacts for a helping hand
If you’re stuck with a blank page and can’t put your thoughts into words, don’t hesitate to ask your colleagues, partner or mom for informal brainstorming. Sometimes, a fresh perspective is all you need to get your creative juices flowing and find inspiration.
5. Deal with the (small) problems occupying your mind
The brain is a wonderful multitasking machine. However, minor to-dos can occupy a lot of mental space and prevent you from focusing on your writing. Deal with the small tasks distracting you, like calling your uncle for his birthday, making an appointment for an oil change or ordering a new ink cartridge for your printer. Your grey matter will thank you!
6. Jot down your ideas every day
in bed or waiting in a long line? Write your ideas down as soon as you can! Keep a notebook and pen handy, or use an app on your smartphone.
7. Do stimulating activities and exercises
If you want to “beef up” your creativity and find inspiration, try to be curious and take initiative in your daily life. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! You could explore the music of a new and upcoming artist, join an improvisation team or even experiment with automatic writing.
